I’d say don’t overthink it too much. In Virginia hardwoods I usually start off still hunting slow and quiet, stopping every few steps to watch and listen for cutting or movement in the treetops. If the woods are noisy with activity, I’ll pick a good oak or hickory that’s dropping and just sit tight, because squirrels will cycle back through if you’re patient. A .22 or a light shotgun both do the job, and the real trick is moving slow enough that the squirrels forget you’re there. It’s a simple hunt, but that’s part of why it’s such a good time
