Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I'd like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that tricky. It feels like there's no good way to avoid the state without adding so much drive time. I've been thinking about the options and if anyone else has faced this challenge, I'd love to hear what you decided to do. Did you find a route that worked or any tips on handling it? I'm open to suggestions.

I'm originally from New York.... Where are you going (destination?).

Avoid NY CITY like the plague!!! Avoid Westchester Co like the plague!!
I *refuse* to visit NY State, family, friends, etc... They can be PO'd all they want!

Ship it to an FFL, pick it up when you arrive, if you can't find a lawful way to drive it there. Seems pretty ridiculous to have to do, and costly, but consider it a highway tax or toll or your forced contribution to anti-2A efforts. There are plenty of hoops to jump through to remain lawful, I do all that I need to.

It's why we need national reciprocity. You did not say if you would bring the firearm for protection or to shoot with at the other end of the journey. Assuming it was for the other end, either to shoot or protection (at the other end) there are a couple of ways to get it to the destination legally, both mentioned already. If it is for self-protection along the way, then the allowable method of keeping it unloaded in the trunk nullifies any value of self-protection and makes it impractical and useless. When I travel, I have mine at my disposal for any need that may arise and for me that is the point of having it in the first place. Full disclosure, I do not travel to or through NY.
