My buddy swears by it, says it's fine for practice. My other buddy says it'll destroy my gun. I'm confused. I've run maybe 500 rounds of steel case through my AR and it seems okay? But now I'm paranoid. What's the actual deal here? You guys use steel case or avoid it?

It’s fine for practice. Dirtier and a little harder on extractors but it’s not gonna magically wreck your AR.

The AR extractor was not designed to run steel cased ammo. An AK on the other hand was designed to handle it. I personally do not use steel cased ammunition through my ARs. Most AR armorers recommend against it.

I spend much of my life at the range...
I've never seen a brass case get jammed in a properly assembled and functioning AR. I commonly see steel cases get jammed in ARs.
Personally I like my ARs too much to cheap out on the ammo.
