Giles county bucks. I love centerfire rifles, but end up shooting most of my bucks in muzzleloading season. The last week of muzzleloader season is right in the best part of the rut. I have read that a if a buck has an injury it will affect his antlers. The second buck had a broadhead just above his shoulder in the backbone area. It was all healed over and didn't seem to bother him at all.

I went out to Amelia WMA (45 min west from Richmond, VA) after lunchtime.
I brought my Remington 870 12ga with some #1 Buck, as I don't think you can shoot rifles.
I ran into 5 other hunters all decked out in blaze orange, as I was. Chit-chat... quietly... NOBODY SAW NOTHING!
Then again, that's public land WMA's here in Virginia. As soon as the guns come out, all the deer vanish. 😞

A quick "Selfie" on a 10-sec timer on the bumper of my GMC Canyon (backed into the parking spot):

Hunting public land can be frustrating. We have done some hunting in the Jefferson National Forest. It seems it depends on the conditions; if the leaves are dry it's like walking on cornflakes, and it's impossible to get close to any deer. But we have had success when it's damp and quiet. Last year we just left the parking lot when a nice buck came running right at us. My son was able to drop him with a single shot from his 243.

Awesome looking buck! I'm envious!

Unfortunately, for me being in the suburbs of Richmond, I don't have a "piece of land" to call my own, or a deer club or anything. I feel like I've been "spinning my wheels" for the last 25 years. :(

ButchA,
When I hunted Amelia you could use a rifle, that was back in the 90s maybe it has changed. There is Powhatan WMA near you that I have hunted off and on for 30 years, even after I moved away from the immediate area (2 hours away now). I always had luck there except for last year I saw nothing, but then again I only went the one time on opening day, what a joke. Most of my hunting is done late season after the rush is over, deer movement patterns have changed, they move during the day, etc., give Powhatan a shot. You have to go deep in though.
