Suppressors for hunting

I am thinking about grabbing a suppressor for deer and hog hunting since Virginia allows them, but is it actually worth the tax stamp wait and money? I am just trying to justify the expense here

I run a can on my deer rifle in Virginia, and I’ll say it’s worth the wait. It cuts the boom down to more of a thump, it spooks deer less, and saves my ears. The downsides is that the tax stamp makes it feel like you’re buying a deer a college education

After 01 Jan 2026, the $200 tax goes away. Then maybe the suppressors come off the NFA. Thanks to POTUS Trump's BBB.

If you're a serious hunter, trust me, hearing protection and less spooked game are worth the money alone. See about trying one out at a dealer first. Make sure you get a mount that fits your gun, and remember you gotta wait on that Form 4, you'll be glad you did on those long waits.

I got a suppressor for my rifle, and it's awesome. The tax stamp was annoying to pay for but it's worth it for quieter hunts and no ringing ears after.

Once you try hunting with a suppressor, it’s tough to go back. My first hog hunt with one felt almost peaceful… until I took the second shot. Yeah, they cost a bit, but are they worth it? Totally!

I suggest that you wait until after 01 Jan 20. After that date, you will not have to have pay $200 to the Treasury Department for the tax stamp for a suppressor, a short-barreled rifle (SBR) or a short-barreled shotgun SBS). Thanks to POTUS Trumps Big Beautiful Bill.

There are several court cases pending against BATFE by organizations such as Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the American Suppressor association (ASA) to have these items removed from the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA). Because they are no longer taxable items they should be removed. Until these cases are ruled upon, you will still need a form 4 but no $200 tax stamp.

Depending upon the court ruling, suppressors may not even require a background check to purchase since they are not firearms. After all, you don't need government approval to buy a muffler for your vehicle. Why should these mufflers be any different?

Because of the materials used in their construction (TI, NI, etc.) and the probable increased demand, I suspect they will not get much cheaper at least initally.

Now with all that said, I need to get a refund for the $800 I have tied up in tax stamps!
