I have been hunting for many years here in Virginia, and I could say that these are my favorite spots:
  • Shenandoah National Park, because there are big deer in the mountains.
  • The George Washington National Forest is good for bow hunting.
  • Clinch Mountain WMA is hard but fun.
  • Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest is nice for rifle season.
  • And Chesapeake Bay marshes are cool for coastal deer.
Where do you hunt in Virginia?

I've had good luck in George Washington National Forest too, especially when I hike in a couple miles away from the road hunters.

It's tough country but worth it. Chesapeake Bay marshes are fun later in the season when the deer start moving with pressure.

Virginia really does have a bit of everything.

Even though I'm here in the suburbs of Richmond (Henrico Co - west end), I drive 2+ hours out to the National Forest in Augusta Co, Elliot Knob, Route 42, etc... Beautiful area, lots of hiking to reach the big ones, but well worth it!

Two of my favorites are Little North Mountain WMA near Goshen and the Powhatan WMA in Powhatan County. I have taken more deer at Powhatan, mainly because it is close enough for a day run (a long day). When we went every year to Goshen it was a week long trip, we would primitive camp and it would be 3-6 plus wives sometimes of us going. Huge fun, not everybody bagged one every time. My dad passed at the end of 2007 and I went with a couple of friends for rifle season in the fall of '08. It was the last time for me it just was not the same without my dad.

My wife and I went up there after my mom died in 2015 at the end of August just riding around for a few days and we ended up going into the town of Goshen and talking with a young couple that had taken over the restaurant there in town and having a cup of coffee, asking them about the folks who were there before them, they did not know a lot but it was interesting to hear how things had changed.

They had the gate closed at the WMA entrance we used to use and the place was 64,000 acres, we used to drive in a mile or so and camp and then you would walk a looong way to hunt. We were not up for a hike up the side of the mountain to see the old camp site so we went to town instead.

The restaurant back in the late 90s and early 2000s would be humming during hunting season, a lot of hunters going in the National Forest (very close by) and Little North Mountain. It was interesting because the owners then had the restaurant, a deli, a gas station, and wait for it, a tanning salon in this small building. She would sell extremely good fresh baked pies every day for $8 a pie and sell the dickens out of them. Everything but the restaurant was not operating when we went back in '15. The young couple did not know the previous owners nor what it was like before, they had just heard stories. Anyway, that is how it was.

Glad you like George Washington National Forest too. I find the best bucks are deep in the hardwood ridges near streams. Try scouting along the North River.

This is what real passion is all about. Not caring about the time you need so you can do it. Awesome. Thanks for the comment.

Been there too. Awesome places. Sorry about your dad. Those Goshen trips sound like good memories. Little North Mountain is tough, but I hunt the ridge tops with a climber stand for better views.

I hunt the George Washington National Forest. Two of my most memorable hunts was when I was hunting alone and hiked up a ridge, or into a deep hollow, for about a mile. I had a heck of a time packing both of those deer out, but those are amongst my most memorable hunts and I will never forget them.

Do you usually go solo into those hollows, or with a buddy?

@Duffy Riggs Haven't tried Locust Springs yet. Is the terrain rough compared to the central GWNF?

I go with a buddy when I can. Not everyone I hunt with is available and some would rather not hunt as hard as I do at times. Don’t get me wrong, I have easy places to hunt for quick morning and evening hunts. For me, I fondly remember the hardest, wettest, or coldest hunts…sometimes I am am successful and others I just, “Well, that was interesting “!

When I first moved to Tidewater, I hunted Chickahominy WMA, which is nice if you get back in a ways. Lots of turkey and deer. Bought our place (4 ac) almost 20 years ago, and I’ve taken a few deer heading for the neighbors’ cornfield through my woods. The last few years, I’ve been hunting a friend’s land in Cumberland. Seen a lot of deer and turkeys, even a bear.
